He was a Baptist by faith, and retired from American Standard. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Sue Atkinson Davis. Survivors include his children, James R. Davis Jr. (Kimberly A.), Robert L. Davis, Mary Sue Catherine Davis and Elizabeth A. Edrington; two brothers, Tommy and Lewis Davis; three sisters, Mary Ann Morrison, Catherine Cullin, and Diane Able; eight grandchildren, Jawny Sue Humpherys, Shaun M.
