Betty Jean Smith Leister Share E-mail Visit Guest Book LEISTER, BETTY JEAN SMITH, 72, of Portland, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2009 surrounded by her loving family.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, LCMS, Louisville and former member of the old Grace Lutheran Church, ELCA, in Portland.
She and her husband operated a family owned bait and tackle shop on Portland Avenue. She was employed by Independence Life & Accident Insurance Company. After they closed she went to work at Assumption as a cook for some of the nuns that were teachers at Assumption High School. She left there and became an assistant teacher in the pre-kindergarten department of the Jefferson County Board of Education until retirement in 1998.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Roy Leister Jr.; parents, Robert and Virginia Smith; brother, Danny Lee Smith and his wife Dorothy; and three grandchildren, Anthony and Randall Baker and Raymond Leister.
Survivors include her four children, Pamela Jean Baker (Willie), Mickey Ray Leister (Teresa) Mark Allen Leister Sr. (Lettie) and Laura Ann Leister; four brothers, J.R. Smith (Sharron), Louis Harvey Smith (Dianna), Paul Norman Smith (Junko) and Bruce Warren Smith (Pam); two sisters, Carol Ann Thomas (John) and Julia Mae Hutchison (Jim); nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Her funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at J.B. Ratterman & Sons, 2114 W. Market St., followed by burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Memorial gifts may go to the organ fund at Faith Lutheran Church or Crusade for Children.
