Donald Chasteen

December 10, 1935 — March 9, 2014

CHASTEEN, DONALD LEE "DON," 78, beloved husband of Beverly (Bennett) Chasteen, peacefully passed away at Baptist Health on Sunday, March 9, 2014. He was born in Louisville, KY, the eldest son of Joseph E. and Wilda Chasteen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Louis Chasteen. He attended Manual High School before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1953. After being honorably discharged from the Corps, he attended Oxnard College while working at Camarillo State Hospital in Oxnard, CA. Upon returning home to Louisville, he worked at Brown and Williamson, Conco, and finished his work career as a Security Consultant at the Mazzoli Federal Building. He was a confirmed member of St. Mark Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council, was an usher, and worked on the property committee. He was also a charter member of Lutheran Men in Mission. Don served in the United States Marine Corps in the 1st Marine Division from 1953-1957 during the Korean Conflict. He received the Korean Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Award, the UN Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. While a Security Consultant in Louisville, Don received a Performance Award from the United States for Superior Performance in accordance with enhanced security measures following the Oklahoma City Bombing. He was also recognized by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld for service during the Cold War in promoting peace and stability for this nation. Don was a life member of the Marine Corps League Detachment #729 and was actively engaged in the Toys for Tots program. He was also a life member in the Marine Corps Association. In addition to his wife Bev, he is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Brimmer (Christopher); a sister, Janet Morris (Roy); a brother, Jim (Dene); many nieces and nephews; special friends, Tom and Barbara Koch; and his beloved grand-dog, Jodie. The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Michael Kommor, Dr. Rene Kurowski and her assistant Karen, Dr. Troy Masden, and the staff of Baptist Health for their care and compassion. Visitation will be at Owen Funeral Home-Jeffersontown, 9318 Taylorsville Road, from 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2014. The funeral will be on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 7153 Southside Drive. Additional visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Louisville Memorial Gardens West Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Marine Corps League Detachment #729 or the Center for Accessible Living. Semper Fi.
