HICKS, GEORGE P., 88, of Louisville, passed away Monday, May 9, 2011 at his home.

Mr. Hicks was born on June 28, 1922 in Brodhead, KY, the son of the late Robert Hemphill and Lela Evelyn Hicks. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he led many of the bands. In 1945, he married the love of his life, Ernestine Jones Hicks. They were married for 59 wonderful years. She preceded him in death on February 12, 2004. He was a retired teacher of the Jefferson County Schools and had also taught in some years in the Indianapolis school system. He was a former band director at Valley High School beginning in 1948. He was the happiest when he had students that wanted to learn and he could train them to become better than they ever dreamed they could. He sang with the Thoroughbred Chorus for many years and was the Minister of Music at the Shivley Baptist Church in the 1950's.

George was always engaged in learning how things worked. He was an inventor, and after his retirement, he invented the Quizminder, a computer program for Quick Recall that incorporated a score board, time clock and buzzer system, that was used in over six hundred schools in Kentucky as well as other states and in the Governors Competition in its early years.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Hicks Rupley of Louisville; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hicks; and many nieces and nephews. George was the youngest of 12 children and the last to pass away.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway, with Rev. Tim Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the Louisville Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Owen Funeral Home. www.cpcfh.com
