Shelley, Grover Cleveland View/Sign Guest Book SHELLEY, GROVER CLEVELAND, 87, of Louisville, passed away at Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Headland in Henry County, AL on November 11, 1921, the son of Robert Gordon Shelley and Vinnie Bell Miller Shelley. He was of the Baptist faith. As a young man in August of 1939, three months before his 17th birthday, he joined the US Army. Master Sgt. Shelley served in the Pacific during World War II, served in Germany and the Korean War. Master Sgt. Shelley retired from the US Army after serving over 24 years for his country. He was highly decorated with honors including the Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal and American Defense Service Medal. He was a member of Pleasure Valley VFW #1181. He also retired from the Kentucky Trust Bank. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers and one sister. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Vivian Irene; a daughter, Lana J. Shelley and a son, Robert H. Shelley, both of Louisville; a granddaughter, Shelley Renée Strong, of Louisville; two sisters, Sara Gwendolyn Doss of Bellmead, TX and Winnie Rose Capps (Jackie) of Webb, AL; three brothers, Aaron Jeffrey Shelley (Viola) of Dothan, AL, Franklin Delano Shelley (Voncile) of Headland, AL and Carl Ray Shelley of Alexandria, LA. He leaves behind sisters and brothers-in-law, Robert and Pauline Compton and Robert and Janice Gentry. He also leaves uncles and aunts and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the U.S.A. Visitation will be Friday, 5-8p.m. and Saturday after 1 p.m. at the funeral home. His funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Hwy. Interment will be 11 a.m. Monday at Louisville Memorial Gardens, West. Published in The Courier-Journal
