SPENCER, HASSIE EARL, 100, of Fairdale, KY, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

She was a beloved mother and a friend to everyone.

As a young woman she worked at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company where she met her future husband, Floyd DeHart Spencer. She was the loving wife of Floyd for 67 years who preceded her in death in 1998. She was the daughter of Noah and Lonnie Hart Starling who died of the Spanish Flu in 1918 when Hassie was only six years old. She had one sister and three brothers who all preceded her in death.

Hassie is survived by seven children, Wanda Strong (James) of Louisville, Wendell Spencer of Louisville, Lona Northener (Lanny) of Louisville, Sharon Booth of Port Richey, FL, Marilyn Magera (Pat) of Eminence, KY, Debbie Hinds (Dave) of Pendleton, KY and Mark Spencer (Gala) of St. Matthews, KY.

Hassie was mainly a stay-at-home mother and was loved by everyone who met her. She and Floyd also had 20 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. They moved to Fairdale, KY in 1946 and lived there until he retired. They then lived in Simpsonville and LaGrange until Floyd passed away. She was a wonderful seamstress and loved to crochet.

Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2011 at Ratterman & Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road, with burial to follow in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that expressions of sympathy be in the form of donations to Hosparus.
