Helen Bates

BATES, HELEN RUTH, 87 passed away Friday, February 7, 2014. She was born March 23, 1926 to the late William Earl Edwards and Ruth Edwards Owens. She was preceded in death by her son Norman William "Billy" Bates and her two brothers Bill and Doug Edwards. Helen was born and raised in Louisville. She graduated from Fairdale High School in 1944. She was a member of Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church where she was involved in youth Christian services and taught Sunday School for 25 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Survivors include her husband Norman Bates; sons Richard (Scharlett) and Robert Bates (Katrina); 10 grandchildren; four great grandchildren, along with numerous friends and loved ones. Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, Nunnelley Funeral Home, 4327 Taylor Blvd., with burial at Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation: noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The family requests expressions of sympathy be made to Carlisle Ave. Baptist Church.
