NORRIS, JERRY R., 77 years young, of the Southend, returned to his Heavenly Father on May 21, 2013.
Mr. Norris retired from the Kentucky Department of Transportation, where he worked for 43 years and the Sheriff's Department after 16 years and was a volunteer fireman for Lake Dreamland Fire Department.
He had a passion for driving race cars and began his racing career in the late 1950's at Jeffersonville's Sportsdrome Speedway. In 1961, he raced claiming cars and New & Late Model Division cars at Louisville's Fairgrounds Motor Speedway and recorded many feature wins and a Mid-Season Championship in the 1970's. During the 1980's, he continued to score feature race victories at Charlestown (IN.) Motor Speedway and in 1988 he competed at the NASCAR sanctioned Louisville Motor Speedway. From the year 2002 until his final race event on April 28, 2013 at the half mile, high banked Salem Speedway. He also competed in many nationally sanctioned race events including a win in the prestigious ARCA 500 at Salem Speedway in 1968, co-driving with Roy Wathen.
His passion for racing was second to only his love and the memories he leaves to his wife of 26 years, Melody; daughter, Marketta Little (Jerome); four grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
Among those preceding him in death include, his parents, Ray and Mary Norris.
Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Schoppenhorst, Underwood and Brooks Funeral Home (Preston Hwy., at Brooks Rd.) with entombment in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Friends may pay their respects on Friday from noon until 8 p.m. at Schoppenhorst.
