John Halbauer

HALBAUER, JOHN J., 89, of Louisville passed away on January 2, 2014 at his home.

John was born on October 24, 1924 in St. Paul Minnesota to the late Felix and Lena (Thell) Halbauer. He was united in marriage to Sarah Ophelia (Shaw) Halbauer October 20, 1947 for 66 years, and to this union brought 8 children to bless this home. He was a member of the Local Machinists Union 681 and had a deep passion for polka music.

He was a World War II veteran from 1942 to 1946, he served as a light mortar crewman, a transportation auto mechanic, and in the military police. He received Honors from President Truman, the Victory Medal of Honor, two Bronze Battle Stars, and the Army Occupational Medal.

He worked for Motor Coach of America before going to Navel Ordnance. He served as a machinist for 22 years at Navel Ordnance before he retired. During his time he contributed to our armed forces building 76mm barrels for the Navy. He received 3 Honors for workmanship.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ophelia Halbauer; sons, Roger Ussery (Remy), Daniel (Connie), Steve, William T., Gregory, Chris (Bart), Ries (Tami); daughter, Rhonda Duvall (Tommy); grandchildren, Roger, Roderick, Randy, Shannon, Tina, Steve, David, Travis, Dena, Diane, Tommy, Shaun, Melissa, Jessica, Roman, Payden, Shane; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; along with several nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Heady-Hardy Funeral Home, 7710 Dixie Hwy., with interment to follow in Louisville Memorial Gardens West. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 2 - 8 p.m.
