Letha Amanda Matthews (Burgess), 89, passed away on December 23, 2014 at Wesley Manor Retirement where she lived during the past nine years.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herschel, of 47 years and four siblings- Violet Wood, Estill Burgess, Eucle Burgess and Alberta Gibson. Letha was born on September 17, 1925 in Crossville, Tennessee. She grew up in the Big Lick community of Cumberland County and graduated from high school in Crossville. IN 1944, she moved to Louisville to live with her sister, Alberta Gibson, and worked in an aircraft manufacturing plant in Louisville until the end of WW II. At that time, she returned to Tennessee to marry her husband when he returned from, his Army service. They returned to Louisville, Ky. which remained their home until their subsequent deaths. Letha was active in the PTA and their church, Parkview United Methodist Church in Shively, KY. She is survived by her son, William, daughter, Nancy, and five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Marvin Burgess of Columbia, SC. A memorial service will be held at Louisville Memorial Gardens West on January 3rd, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. with interment to follow.
