KNADLER, MARGARET TOLER KELLY, 95, Carmel, IN, formerly of Louisville and Lewisport, KY, died April 7, 2010.
She was born on a farm near New Albany, IN on September 12, 1914 to William and Pauline Toler.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Rowe, Carmel; sister Dorothy Kessinger, Hopkinsville, and John E. Knadler, Houston, TX; sister-in-law, Pat Toler, Owensboro; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandsons.
Margaret was an avid book reader most of her life, enjoying all variety. After retirement, she became an accomplished seamstress, making all her clothes and some for family members. She liked doing needlework for gifts and crocheted many baby jackets, caps and afghans. Margaret loved babies and toddlers and felt the best times of her life was baby-sitting her grandkids and great grand-children.
At age eight, she joined the Lewisport Presbyterian Church and was the pianist there for several years. During her high school years, she played the piano in the school orchestra and with group of five musicians at church socials and ice cream suppers. In 1984, she joined the Good Shepherd Worship Center, Louisville.
In 1938, Margaret came to Louisville and worked as a payroll clerk at the W.P.A.; later as an IBM keypunch operator. Starting in the late 1940's, she was a supervisor at the Louisville Medical Depot and then a Claims Examiner at Inland Empire Insurance Co until the mid 1950s. From the late 1950s she was an executive secretary and assistant secretary-treasurer at the Institute of Modern Management until retirement.
In early 1980, she began writing poems she thought the Lord sent her and in 1991 entered one in a national contest. It was a finalist. The Famous Poet Society invited her, in 2004, to attend their convention and become a member, which she was unable to do. For gifts, she compiled the poems in an album with pictures. On her 92nd birthday, the Kentucky Governor commissioned her as an honorary Kentucky Colonel.
She was a beloved and loving mother and grandmother; always ready to listen, give help and advice when needed. All who knew her will remember her kindness, sense of humor and love of God. She will be missed.
Margaret was preceded in death by husband Clarence Knadler; brother James B. Toler, and Shirley M. Toler; sister, Billie T. Alsop and step-granddaughter, Dierdra Sharpus.
Visitation will be Friday, April 16, 2010 at the Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Carmel from 5-7 p.m. with service following. Burial will be in the Jefferson Memorial Gardens East, Louisville, 1 p.m. Saturday
