Melvin Lowell "Doc" Elam, 87, went home to meet his Lord, Friday, June 21, 2013
Doc was born March 16, 1926 in Wrigley, KY to Russell L. and Elizabeth Fannin Elam. In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a sergeant. He returned home to graduate from Morgan County High School in 1947.
Doc married Mary Ellen Wakefield on November 13, 1948. He began Premed studies at UK before finishing his degree at U of L School of Dentistry in 1958. That same year he began his dental practice in Valley Station and continued in the same location until he retired in 2001.
Doc was an active member of Rockford Lane Baptist for over 40 years. He served as a teacher, choir member, deacon and was a former Trustee of the Southern Seminary. His other interests included wood working, electronics and especially spending time with his family.
Doc is preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Mary Ellen, parents, and a sister Mary Ruth. He is survived by his sister Glois Williams (Wendell) of West Liberty, KY. Doc has four married children; Douglas Elam (Marianne), Deborah Brown (Michael), Melody Newton (Craig), and Mark Elam (Denyse). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
