SMITH, NED L., 72, of Louisville, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Norton Brownsboro Hospital.
He was born December 20, 1939 in Louisville, the son of the late James Ernest Smith and Ruth Elma Harryman Smith.
Ned was a pipefitter with Local 502, (formerly 522) and was an employee of National Distillers prior to becoming a pipefitter.
He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church, where he served as a communion minister at Norton Brownsboro Hospital. He was a former member of St. Helen Catholic Church, former volunteer for Dixie Suburban Fire Department and Shively Fire Department, where he also served as Fire Marshall. Ned volunteered his time to the Mattingly Center for Continuing Education and the Special Olympics.
Ned was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a love for life, was a very strong willed individual and always wanted others to be happy.
He is preceded in death by a sister, Jane and two brothers, Bob and Earl.
Ned is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn Kaufman Smith; three daughters, Sandy Doyle (Jack), Paula Haysley (Joe) and Debbie Thompson (Chip); six grandchildren, Bradley, Jacob and Leann (Frankie) Doyle, Nathan and Morgan Haysley and Gabbie Thompson and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Ann Allen and his brother, James D. (Helen) Smith.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 212 Mt. Mercy Dr., Pewee Valley, KY, with burial to follow in Louisville Memorial Gardens East. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday at Pearson Ratterman Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road.
