Smith, Opal E "Shorty", 87, passed from this earthly life into his Heavenly home on July 11, 2015. Opal was the second son born to the late Luther and Lois Lee Smith. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oval, Gillard and Levi Smith and two sisters Marie Tomes and Azalee Lacefield. Opal married his life partner and sweetheart Wanda Embry on November 7, 1957.To this union and surviving him are a daughter Diann (Keith) Davis, of Fernandina Beach, FL and a son Jerry Ray (Laura) Smith of Berea, KY. His surviving grandchildren whom he dearly loved are Jason Davis, Brittni Fain, Aaron Michael Smith, Breanna Smith and Rachel Spires. His great-grandchildren whom he adored are Eva Davis, Elijah Davis, Eleanor Davis, Colton Fain, Chandler Spires and Isla Spires.He is also survived by his two loving sisters, Becky Meredith (Bill) and Dimple Meredith (Larry), and many nieces and nephews. Opal was proud to be an American and willingly went to serve his country with pride during World War II. He was a Area Superintendent for the Austin Company for 38 years. He was a member of International Order of Oddfellows and a Mason. He was a member of Hillsdale Baptist Church for 46 years and loved his church family. By God's grace Opal's life was forever changed at the age of 32 when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. His family will miss him but are rejoicing because we know his absence here means he is "present with the Lord" How grateful we are that God took him in His arms and gave him perfect Peace Funeral service will be at Hillsdale Baptist Church 4714 East Pages Lane on Tuesday at noon with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens (West). Visitation is Monday, 1-8 p.m. at Owen Funeral Home 5317 Dixie Highway and at the church Tuesday, 10 a.m. until funeral time
