KELLY, PATRICIA "PATSY" DOWDEN, 87, passed away February 3, 2013 at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN.
She grew up in Eminence, KY, the daughter of Dr. Albert and Alma Dowden. She married Alan Lawrence Kelly, Sr., of LaGrange, KY. After residing in Louisville for several years, the couple moved to New York City where Alan studied at the Art Students League and worked as a freelance magazine illustrator. Upon their return to Louisville, Alan established a successful freelance advertising art career, while Patsy worked as an editor for The National Horseman magazine. When her two sons were grown, Patsy completed her BA degree in Latin at Ursuline College in Louisville. She taught at Shawnee High School in Louisville where she was popular with students who frequently sought her out for academic and life advice. To better serve them, Patsy returned to school once again, earning an MA degree and much of the work required for a doctorate in psychology, continuing on at Shawnee as a guidance counselor. She and Alan continued to travel throughout the world after her retirement, visiting nearly 50 countries overall and almost all U.S. states. She was a longtime member of Beargrass Christian Church.
Patsy will be remembered as an intelligent, well-liked, and dedicated teacher who had a passion for travel, music, the company of friends and relatives, and speaking her mind. She was fortunate to have had a life rich in learning and experience.
In 2005, Alan passed away, and Patsy moved to Nashville, TN, spending her last years in retirement communities near her granddaughter and four great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Kelly, Sr.; and a son, James Dowden Kelly.
She is survived by one son, Alan Kelly, Jr.; her daughter-in-law, Carla Kelly; her grandchildren, Bill and Beth Kelly; her granddaughter, Rachel Snyder, who was always generous with time and help for her grandmother; her grandson-in-law, Doug Snyder; her four great-granddaughters, Virginia, McKenna, Caroline, and Annie Snyder, whose company Patsy always greatly enjoyed; and her good friend, Rev. John Lindsley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 in the Chapel of Louisville Memorial Gardens East, 11601 Ballardsville Road. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. on Friday at Arch L. Heady and Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd.
