Perla Gilbert

July 24, 1951 — September 23, 2022

Louisville

Perla B. Gilbert, 71, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, September 23, 2022, at Baptist Hospital.  She was born July 24, 1951, in Hamburg, Germany, to the late David and Ruth Helene (Hennemann) Baumgarten.  David Baumgarten, a Holocaust survivor that was a Prisoner of War during World War II and held by the Third Reich in the Dachau Concentration Camp is where Perla began to draw her strength from a very young age, at less than a year-old Perla and her family migrated to America.

Perla was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mark Baumgarten.

Left to cherish the sweet memories of Perla’s life and carry on her precious memory is her loving husband of 28 wonderful years, Kenneth Gilbert; her three children, Chris Masters (Amanda), Jeremy Gilbert, and Brittany Horsley (David); her five grandchildren that she adored, Jeremy Gilbert, Jr., Kaeleigh Gilbert, Kailee Horsley, Eryn Horsley, and Helena Horsley; and she was patiently anticipating the arrival of grandbaby number six, Houston Horsley, in February 2023; her four siblings, Judith B. Cloud, Dennis Baumgarten (Vicci), Joseph Baumgarten, and Susie Roehrig (Vince); her grand dog, Lilly; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.  She will be immensely missed by all that knew her.

Perla was born of the Jewish faith and converted to Christianity when she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.  She was a member of Church of the Crossroads in Mount Washington, Kentucky.  Perla lived a life full of adversity, but remained humble and always had a gorgeous, contagious smile on her face, it would light up a room.  She was an extremely strong woman, and her faith in the Lord was immeasurable.  Perla had an intense love for her family and enjoyed teaching them by example, always telling them, “I love you always.”  She was a very loving wife and took great pride in taking care of her family.  Music was a source of enjoyment for Perla and she loved to listen to songs and dance. Perla loved to rescue dogs, and missed her dog, Buddy, badly.

Funeral Services to celebrate and remember Perla’s life will be held at 11AM, Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home West, 4400 Dixie Highway, with Pastor John Parkey officiating.  Interment will follow the funeral in Louisville Memorial Gardens Cemetery West.  Friends may call on the family and share memories on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, from 3PM until 7PM at the funeral home.
