William Edward Gilbert "Bill" Share E-mail Visit Guest Book GILBERT, WILLIAM EDWARD "BILL," 82, of Louisville, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Mercy Sacred Heart Village, after an extended illness.
Bill was a native West Virginian who, at age 17, enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. He served his country honorably, attaining the rank of seaman second class and earning both the Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. After the war, he returned to West Virginia and worked as a coal miner.
In 1950 he married his soul mate, Mossie Lee Gilbert (McNeeley) and shortly thereafter they moved to Louisville to build their life together. Bill became widely respected as a master carpenter and his work still graces countless homes and business establishments throughout Louisville. Although he possessed many talents and accomplished much during his lifetime, his crowning achievement was as an incomparable husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor and friend.
Bill was a man of unrivaled character, and he will be sorely missed by all who had the honor and privilege of knowing him.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Marcellus Gilbert, of Ravenswood, WV; and his sister, Modena Bednarsky, of Louisville.
He is survived by Mossie Gilbert, his wife of nearly 60 years; his son, Jay Gilbert (Larisa), of Louisville); his daughter, Deena Madison, of Louisville; and his five grandchildren, Tori and Brie Madison and Jack, Mike and Anne Elise Gilbert.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, from 2-8 p.m. at Louisville Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4400 Memorial Gardens Dr., in Shively, (502) 447- 4220.
