Merle Garrett

July 4, 1919 — May 30, 2015

Garrett, Merle Gillespie,of Louisville, went to her heavenly home on May 30, 2015. Born in Washington County, Kentucky, on July 4, 1919, she attended school in Mackville, Kentucky, and she graduated from Harrodsburg High School, Harrodsburg, Kentucky, and Bryant-Stratton Business School, Lexington, Kentucky. She was a woman of great faith in God and a member of Hunsinger Lane Church. She retired from the Veteran's Administration. She was the wife of James Garrett and the daughter of Wood Graves and Lillie Sweeney Gillespie and the baby sister of four brothers, Paul, James, Marion, and Joseph, all of whom predeceased her. Survivors are nieces Anne Clark, Marian Copeland, Ernestine Carpenter, Nancy Keys, Jean Fleming, Merle Beatty, Beverly Millsap, and nephews, David Gillespie, Dr. Wood E. Currens, and Douglas Gillespie. The family is very grateful to Tanya Brooks, Sarah Mattingly, and Bernadette Wood, her devoted caregivers for many years, and to the staff at Norton Suburban Hospital, who were most compassionate and supportive. Visitation is 10am Tuesday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with a service to celebrate Merle's life to follow at noon. Interment will be in Louisville Memorial Gardens, West. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to her church, Hunsinger Lane Baptist Church, 3400 Summerfield Drive, Louisville, KY 40220.
